How To Find Your Scalp Type

We often forget that the scalp is an extension of our skin, with more sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and sweat glands. And just like the rest of your skin, the scalp too faces certain issues that can trigger a series of hair woes.

However, not all scalps are the same. There are different scalp types, and each one has its own fair share of problems.

Now that you know that your skin and scalp are the same, you need to shower the same amount of love on your scalp as you do to your face and the rest of your body.

To understand scalp care better and chalk out a routine to keep scalp conditions at bay, you need to figure out your scalp type. This is where we step in to help you. Learn more about the different types of scalp and ways to treat the scalp conditions associated with them.

Different types of scalp and issues faced by them

Dry Scalp

If you frequently experience itchiness and notice powdery flakes falling off, every time you scratch your scalp or give it a subtle shake, it indicates that you have a dry scalp.

This condition occurs when your pH levels are high, and your scalp produces less sebum. A less acidic scalp with less sebum cannot keep the bacteria away, and this causes hair fall and other skin conditions. Plus, dry hair is quite prone to breakage.

Oily Scalp

If your hair clumps together or feels extremely greasy as the day progresses, you have an oily scalp.

This occurs when your sebaceous glands go into overdrive and produce more sebum than the usual count. This sebum coats your hair strands and makes them greasy, which attracts dirt and other impurities.

An oily scalp also triggers dandruff. This irritates your scalp further, causing it to turn flaky to get rid of the irritant, thereby triggering dandruff.

Normal Scalp

A normal scalp is a healthy scalp.

It has the right amount of sebum and an ideal pH level.

A normal healthy scalp is a perfect foundation for shiny, beautiful, and healthy hair.

Combination Scalp

Out of all the different types of scalp, the combination scalp can be a bit tricky. It is similar to the combination skin on your face. In this type, there are dry and oily areas spread across the scalp.

It’s easy to identify a combination scalp from the dull wiry texture of the hair, which occurs because of the overactive sebaceous glands and poor scalp condition.

It creates a glut of sebum, which is absorbed back into the scalp and prevents essential oils from being absorbed into the length of your hair. This condition causes dry and frizzy ends with extremely oily roots.
